It looks like the iPad is shaping up to be the ultimate ereader. Thanks to the nature of the app store, the major ereader retailers already have apps that will work on the iPad. Also, the iBooks app will be able to handle unlocked .epub files and .pdfs. It looks like they are taking the iPod formula and applying it to the ebook market. Bizarrely, the iPad is shaping up to be one of the most open ereaders available, despite it being an Apple product.

icoot: It won’t support iBooks at launch but you can bet that it will as soon as the deals with the publishers are in place. Besides, there’s always the kindle app.

The ipad in the UK will not support ibooks, but i figure there are enough apps for reading that i’ll still get the ipad

Eric, I don’t think pre-orders start this Friday in the UK. I think we have to wait a little longer even to see the prices we are going to have to pay.

I think this comment perfectly sums up the idiocy of people on the internet.

In the article you failed to read, the author made some valid points justifying *his* decision to purchase an iPad.

You claim that he will use this for procrastination rather than doing “real” productive things, yet he clearly states that Professional tools (eg Photoshop) are simply overkill. In fact, using the professional tool seems likely to hinder productivity when a much simpler (and exponentially cheaper) software package will work.

Your claim is that the iPad is a huge chunk of cash. But how much is photoshop? Roughly the same price-point.

And let’s talk about “real” life for a moment, shall we? The author explains that he doesn’t read traditional books now, so explain how buying/using an iPad will change this?

If anything, I would wager that the author would be *more* likely to read traditional books in a non-traditional format utilizing the software e-reader type application.

Your assessment is little more than ad hominem, and you clearly missed the point of the article. Provided you actually read it before lashing out with your vile rhetoric.

Agree with the authors position or not, it’s clear that *you*, sir or madame, are the windowlicker.

I think this just sums up the idiocy of people for buying the iPad if these are the reasons for parting with such a huge chunk of cash.
Basically it’s a device for people who can’t be arsed with any of the real life – and wholly more substantial – counterparts to things like reading a real book and doing design in a real application or even on a pad of paper. In fact, this ultimate procrastination device is so good at catering for people trying to avoid doing ‘real’ productive things, that these apathetic people all over don’t even have to look for new ways to procrastinate – it’s all right in front of them in this shiny shiny piece of apple guff. I can imagine these people’s minds will begin to fade into some sort of mush that stops them doing anything else than slide their greasy fingers across a glass screen.
Soon enough they’ll be sliding their tongues across the windows on a certain type of bus.
